Say if you drag the route in Google Maps to follow a river, for example, it's basically automatic. Fine-adjusting the Garmin-planned route is a lot more work than adjusting the Google-planned route. But an address search in Garmin Connect zooms the map to near the address, and you have to pinpoint the exact location yourself With Google Maps, you can enter precise addresses as destinations. My personal reasons for preferring Google Maps over the native Garmin course planning function (haven't used the course planning functions on Strava/MapMyRun/etc) are: Hopefully the instructions should be clear enough, but let me know if you have any issues. That's it! The Google maps directions is now loaded into your device as a course.Activate everything (Routes, Tracks, Waypoints and Geotagged photos), and press send. If you want the POIS and the course, right-click on the entire KML file and click 'Send to your device'. Activate both Routes and Tracks (just to be safe) and send to your watch. If you want ONLY the course and not the POIs, right-click on the track/route, and click 'Send to device'.(Optional) If you did steps 14 & 15, erase the redundant walking/running track.(Optional) Change your activity type accordingly if your activity is not walking/running.

In Basecamp, go to File - Import Into… to import the downloaded KML file.Once the file is downloaded, open Garmin Basecamp and connect your Garmin device to your computer.Select the directions layer you just created, and select 'Export as KML instead of KMZ'.Click on the triple dot menu next to the map name (not layer name), and click 'Export to KML/KMZ'.Add your starting point, your end point, and any other stops you want to make.Change your transportation mode to either cycling or walking/running.Open a browser, login to your Google account, and go to My Maps (link).

A computer (Windows or Mac - sorry, Linux users).Imgur album with screenshots for some steps With that out of the way, here's the tutorial. Once you get used to it, it will probably take less than 5 minutes to get a Google Maps directions loaded into your device. I just wanted to be thorough with my write-up. It seems like a lengthy process, but it's really not. So there was actually more interest than I had expected, so here's the tutorial I promised.
